South Carolina DOT breaks ground on Carolina Crossroads project

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) this week held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Carolina Crossroads project.

According to SCDOT, this project is South Carolina‘s largest infrastructure project in history and will improve 14 miles of I-20, I-26, and I-126. This includes the area commonly called “Malfunction Junction.”

According to WIS-TV, phases one and two of the project will begin this month.

“You’ll see roadwork within the next two weeks starting to happen out here, and then it’ll just keep building every two years going forward,” SCDOT Transportation Secretary Christy A. Hall told WIS-TV. “We have two massive contracts already under construction here. Eventually to where we’ve got the entire 14-mile corridor under construction.”

SCDOT announced in May that the contract for Phase 1 of the $1.7 billion Carolina Crossroads project was awarded to the joint-venture of Archer-United. Phase 1 of the project is expected to finish up by 2024. All five phases of Carolina Crossroads are anticipated to be fully complete and open to traffic by the end of 2029.
